UNDP/GEF Tisza MSP - Making space for water in the Bodrog River Basin

The Bodrog River Basin makes part of the Tisza River Basin and is shared by Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine. Environmental problems and flood damages are increasing and putting pressures on the people - high time for a project of the UNDP / GEF to promote multiple benefits of wetlands and floodplains.

The Bodrog River Basin

The Bodrog river basin is shared by Slovakia, Hungary and Ukraine and covers a total area of 11,522 km².  It recieves its water mainly from the four rivers, Latorica, Laborec, Uh and Ondavai. The Bodrog flows into the Tisza in Tokaj (Hungary).

The original floodplain area has partly been destroyed, which leads to regular floods in spring and winter, caused by snow melt and rain and in summer and autumn, caused by rain.

Goals of the Project

The main objective is to mitigate the consequences of floods through achieving a sustainable management of the flood risk in Bodrog river basin  countries. This goal can only be achieved by creating partnerships between national and local levels. The development of a “Strategy for mitigation of floods for Bodrog River Basin countries” is key for the implementation of practical and sustainable solutions for flood prevention.

Pilot projects

In order to see changes to current policies on wetlands and floodplains management in the Bodrog River Basin, demonstration projects will be undertaken. The aim of the demonstration projects is to enhance knowledge of techniques for improved self-governance at the local and community level that can also be applied throughout the basin. This should provide both economic gains and environmental improvements through integrated land and water resource management.

The pilot projects are selected based on the following criteria:
• Will allow creating “room for waters” during the flood events;
• Will improve natural wetland habitats;
• Is simple technical solution;
• Is small scale restoration activity;
• Is financially feasible (up to 25,000 USD);
• Can be done in very short period of time (within 12 months).

Kick-off Meeting, June 10, 2009

On June 10 2009 in the village of Barvinok in Ukraine the kick-off meeting of the `Bodrog project` was held with the participation of all partners including the ICPDR Project Implementation Unit (PIU) and UNDP.

In the frame of the meeting the main activities of the project were introduced and tasks of the project partners were agreed.

The project is now full speed under way.
