Focus
Areas
Chemicals
UNEP provides the main catalytic force
in the UN system for global action on the environmentally sound management of
hazardous chemicals. UNEP Chemicals works directly with countries to build national
capacity for the safe production, use and disposal of chemicals, and to promote
and disseminate state of-the-art information on chemical safety.
Economics
UNEP is enhancing
countries' abilities to asses the environmental as well as developmental impacts
of trade, to integrate environmental considerations into macroeconomic policies
more generally, and to design and use efficient economic instruments for environmental
policy.
Energy
UNEP Energy
activities help partners incorporate environmental factors into their energy-related
decisions. They provide information, develop tools for decision makers, improve
analytical and policy skills, and conduct pilot and demonstration projects.
Most activities are focused on developing countries and countries with economies
in transition.
Cleaner Production
Cleaner Production
is the continuous application of an integrated preventive environmental strategy
applied to processes, products, and services to increase overall efficiency
and reduce risks to humans and the environment. DTIE's Cleaner Production activities
promote strategies, policies and practices to prevent pollution from processes,
products and services.
Finance
UNEP has
a number of activities with the banking and insurance community, which are focused
on helping financial decision makers become more aware of investment opportunities
in the sustainable energy sector.
Industry
UNEP Industry
Outreach branch has for many years worked to stimulate individual companies
- and industry associations through their membership - to report on their environmental
performance and the implementation of their voluntary commitments in the form
of codes of conduct and charters.
Sustainable Consumption
UNEP's Sustainable
Consumption (SC) programme focuses on understanding the forces that drive consumption
patterns around the world and how to translate those findings into tangible
activities for business (including the advertising industry) and other stakeholders.
Technology
The UNEP - IETC centre in Osaka, Japan promotes the adoption and use
of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) with a focus on the environmental
management of cities and freshwater basins, in developing countries and countries
in transition.
Tourism
Tourism is
now one of the world’s largest industries. UNEP works closely with a number
of partners to promote sustainable tourism as part of its role under the Commission
on Sustainable Development to coordinate interagency implementation of Agenda
21 issues on tourism. UNEP’s strategy for sustainable tourism covers its
promotion among government agencies and industry, developing sustainable tourism
tools for the management of protected or sensitive areas, and supporting the
implementation of multilateral environmental agreements relevant to tourism.
Transport
UNEP has
established the Mobility Forum, a voluntary initiative with the automotive industry.
The Mobility Forum provides automotive industry members with a platform to share
environmental best practice experience and to develop new strategies for sustainable
mobility. Activities also help to develop cleaner fuels and improve the environmental
performance of the air transport sector. Some examples: Global Overlays and
Transport Publications.
