The role of the UNEP
Division of Technology, Industry and Economics
located in Paris, France, is to:
• promote the development of policies, economic instruments, management
practices and tools that ensure an environmentally sound approach to activities
• develop partnerships with the private sector and corresponding outreach
activities
• promote the use and transfer of cleaner, safer and environmentally
sound technologies
• assist in the preparation of international agreements and guidelines
such as the Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
• work in close cooperation with UNEP's six Regional Offices to disseminate
information and implement activities in the regions as well as collect information
regarding the relevant needs of the countries
UNEP DTIE brings together
the following branches coordinated by the Office
of the Division Director:
The International Environment Technology Centre
in Osaka:
• promotes the adoption and use of environmentally sound technologies
(ESTs) with a focus on the environmental management of cities and freshwater
basins, in developing countries and countries in transition.
The Production and Consumption Branch
in Paris:
• promotes 're-engineering' of production and consumption patterns to
improve resource efficiency through cleaner technology, products and services
and environmental management systems.
The Chemicals Branch in Geneva:
• catalyses global chemical safety through negotiations of legally binding
instruments;
• builds national chemical safety capabilities through information exchange,
training and capacity building.
The Energy Branch in
Paris:
• addresses the enviornmental consequences of energy production and
use, such as global climate change and local air pollution.
The OzonAction Branch in Paris:
• promotes the adoption of ozone-friendly and energy-efficient practices
and policies. It fulfills UNEP's mandate as Implementing Agency of the Montreal
Protocol's Multilateral Fund and supports the Climate Change Convention.
The Economics and Trade Branch in Geneva:
• improves countries' understanding of the interlinkages and complementarities
between trade, environment and development;
• enhances the capacities of countries in integrating environmental
considerations into development planning and decision-making.
The Coordination of Regional
Activities Branch in Paris:
• coodinates regional delivery of UNEP DTIE's activities;
• oversees DTIE's activities funded by the Global Environment Facility
(GEF).
