The five Drin River Riparians sign in Tirana, Albania a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a Shared Strategic Vision for the Sustainable Management of the Drin River Basin aiming to protect the shared water resources.

MedPAN South Project: Building Capacities for sustainable tourism in MPAs

From 3 to 8 October 2011, the third Regional Training on "Planning for sustainable tourism" was held in Split, Croatia. The training hosted 28 participants, 4 guest speakers, 5 trainers and 3 observers. This was the last regional training within the MedPAN South Project.

SPA/RAC in cooperation with the World Bank Marseille Centre for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) - which is the project lead partner under the Sustainable MED programme -, the Paul Cezanne University (Mediterranean Institute of Ecology and Paleoecology - IMEP), the Conservatoire du Littoral, and with the participation of the Damascus University produced the thematic trilingual glossary in Arabic, English and French (ecoOnto-Med) which is now available on line.

Awareness raising workshop on POPs in Egypt by CP/RAC

The UNEP / MAP Regional Activity Center for Cleaner Production (CP/RAC) organized an awareness raising workshop on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the American University of Cairo (Egypt). The "POPs in our Life" workshop took place on 15th November 2011 with the aim to give attendants basic information about toxic chemicals that are present in our daily life.

SPA/RAC:Protecting biodiversity along the Montenegrin coast

From 25 October to 3 November, 2011, SPA/RAC undertook a rapid assessment of benthic habitats on the southern coast of Montenegro, between Bar and Ulcinj and on the Bay of Kotor, with the involvement of national experts from the Institute of Marine Biology of Kotor and the Nautilus local NGO, as well as international experts.

The Medpartnership, one of GEF's large regional projects, was featured at the 6th biennial International Waters Conference that was held in Dubrovnik under the title "Raising the Bar: 20 Years of GEF Transboundary Water Results". The project's newly developed iPad application was also launched.

The MedPartnership iPad application was successfully launched on Monday, 17 October in Dubrovnik within the framework of the 6th International Waters Conference. The application showcases the project and its activities in a friendly manner using cutting-edge technology. Through the extensive use of imagery and video, it manages to illustrate the activities of the project in an attractive manner.

The Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Sea Large Marine Ecosystem will be showcased during the 6th International Waters Conference to be held in Dubrovnik on 17-20 October 2011. As this year's Conference coincides with the 20th anniversary of the GEF's establishment, it will focus on the transboundary results and impacts of the GEF International waters portfolio.
