New publication on "Making MPAs Work" shares lessons learned in the Mediterranean

"Making Marine Protected Areas Work - Lessons Learned in the Mediterranean" is the title of the new publication, released by WWF Mediterranean within the framework of the MedPartnership, providing easily understandable and useful guidance to all practitioners working to protect and manage the seas around the world. The report aims raise awareness on the role that well designed and effectively managed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) can play in helping to maintain and rehabilitate the health of our seas.

Algeria keeps its momentum for ICZM!

On 21 November, the results of the first stage of the two pilot activities, namely, the development of a National ICZM Strategy for Algeria and of a Coastal Plan for Reghaia, have been presented at a meeting held in the premises of the Algerian Ministry of Land-Use Planning, Environment, and Town (MATEV). The meeting was organised by MATEV with the support of PAP/RAC and UNESCO-HIP in the framework of the MedPartnership.

More than 300 key players are currently meeting in Turkey for the first time to develop a joint work program to improve the protection of the Mediterranean Sea during the 2012 Forum of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean on 25-28 November 2012 in Antalya, Turkey. The Forum is a joint initiative of the Network of Marine Protected Areas Managers in the Mediterranean (MedPAN) and its partners, including RAC/SPA and WWF Mediterranean, within the framework of the MedPartnership.

Working to expand the network of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean

SPA/RAC has been working tirelessly for the past months to expand the network of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean in Morocco, Lebanon, Montenegro and Tunisia (Sub-Component 3.1. Conservation of Coastal and Marine Diversity through the Development of a Mediterranean Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network).

The MedPartnership addresses Parliamentarians, journalists and NGOs in Athens

The MedPartnership was showcased to more than a 120 Members of Parliament, journalists and NGOs from 22 Mediterranean countries who gathered in Athens, Greece on 22 and 23 October 2012. The workshop was organized within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/ Mediterranean Environment Programme and constituted the first international meeting of Mediterranean MPs after the events of the Arab Spring.

New website on PCBs in the Mediterranean

UNEP/MAP CP/RAC (United Nations Environment Program- Mediterranean Action Plan- Regional Activity Centre for Cleaner Production) and UNEP/MAP MEDPOL (United Nations Environment Program- Mediterranean Action Plan- Programme for the Assessment and Control of Pollution in the Mediterranean Region) have launched a new website on "PCBs in the Mediterranean" (www.pcbsmed.org ) seeking to provide access to general information on PCBs.

Meeting stakeholders in Albania and Montenegro for the development of the Buna/Bojana Transboundary Integrated Management Plan

GWP-Med just completed a series of consultations in Montenegro and Albania where the perceptions of local stakeholders on the main pressures of natural resources management in the river basin and coastal area were successfully identified. The consultations were held in the municipalities of Bar and Ulcinj in Montenegro and the communes of Ana e Malit, Berdice, Bushat, Dajç and Velipoje in September and October 2012.

Morocco and Croatia ratify the ICZM protocol

Croatia and Morocco have ratified the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Protocol, the first legally binding instrument of its type in the world. ICZM is considered the way forward for the sustainable development of coastal zones and is characterized by a distinctive integrated approach to providing solutions to the complex environmental, social, economic and institutional problems of coastal zones.

Mediterranean training session on ecological monitoring in MPAs

The MedMPAnet Project has organized a second regional training session on the ecological monitoring in MPAs, on 23-28 September 2012, as a continuation of the first Mediterranean training session on the identification and classification techniques of marine and coastal species for the ecological monitoring on the MPAs held on 25 September - 1 October 2011.

The Third Steering Committee Meeting of the MedPartnership was held on 15-17 May 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey, hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of Turkey and with representatives from Algeria, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Lebanon, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestinian Authority and Tunisia. The EC, Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the French Development Agency, UNEP, the WB, FAO, UNIDO, several regional activity centers of MAP, and non-governmental organisations including WWF, GWP-Med and MIO-ECSDE also participated.
