Workshop on Spirulina Cultivation on Treated Water from Pig Farms,
7 and 9 January 2009, Rachaburi and Nakormpratom, Thailand
Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Thailand arranged the
workshops on spirulina cultivation on treated water from pig farms on 7
and 9 January 2009 in Rachaburi and Nakormpratom for pig farmers and
DLD officers in these 2 provinces.
DLD in collaboration with the Algae Biotechnology Center of King
Mongkut Institution of Technology, Thonburi (KMITT) study the
possibility of spirulina cultivation on treated water from pig farm.
Spirulina is a source of protein, carotenoids, chlorophyll, vitamin
B12, Gamma Linoric acid and others. It is used as a nutritional and
therapeutic supplement for human. Also, it is used in animal feed,
especially fancy fish, red carp, carp feed.
The research showed that treated water from pig farm can be used for
cultivating spirulina as the following formula:
-
Spirulina feed 20%
-
treated water from pig farm 20%
-
tap or irrigation water 60%
-
Sodium bicarbonate 4.5 g/liter
-
Urea 0.2-0.25 g/liter
KMITT has installed 2 types of tanks for spirulina cultivation
(small tanks and experimental tanks) in Rachaburi and Nakormprathom.
The farm in Rachaburi is a large farm with 15,000 pigs. The farm in
Nakormprathom is a small farm with 100 pigs. Treated water from the
small farm is darker than that from the large farm. Spirulina can be
cultivated in both types of farm. More study on marketing opportunity
will be done by KMITT.
