Ramesh´s expertise includes coastal ecosystem biogeochemistry and coastal zone management. He received his MPhil and PhD in Environmental Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and a second PhD in Marine Sciences from the McGill University, Canada. After gaining research experience at Harvard University, Max-Planck-Institute für Chemie, and the University of Newcastle, Ramesh focused and furthered his research on measurement of trace gases CH4, N2O and CO2 and the processes governing their production and emissions. For the past decade, Ramesh has been involved in coastal zone management capacity building and planning by creating curriculum for Masters in Coastal Management, training and an e-learning module on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in collaboration with several international Institutions.
His primary focus on LOICZ-related research includes regional synthesis on the river basins of South Asia with particular focus on the Catchment-Coast-Continuum. Ramesh aims to strengthen and focus the existing research capabilities towards the three priority topics identified by LOICZ into a unified national strategy for future coastal research in India.
About the LOICZ Regional Node South Asia
People on the Poompuhar Beach
In August 2009, the South Asia Node of LOICZ was officially initiated in India, with Anna University Chennai as its hub. The focus of the South Asia node is to bring together a large network of individuals and institutions involved in coastal research under the umbrella of LOICZ in India and other Asian countries.
Mandate
The mandate of a LOICZ Regional Node is to facilitate a “Synthesis of patterns of change and trajectories in the region’s coast and implications to policy and management”. A LOICZ Regional Node should develop a Regional Implementation Strategy based on the scientific framework provided by the LOICZ Science Plan and the mid-term Priority Topics.
