Komadougou-Yobe Basin Pilot Project Signed Funding Agreement of $215,751 for Local Initiatives
Agreements for funding 9 local initiatives projects totaling $215,751 were signed Thursday 8thrd of March 2007 with community associations and the LCBC GEF Project in Hadejia, Jigawa State Nigeria within the framework of funding provided to local communities in the in FGN/IUCN/DFID JWL/LCBC Komadougou-Yobe Basin Pilot Project.
The community projects are designed by the local communities with the assistance of the partnership of the Komadougou-Yobe Basin Pilot Project. All the projects have the common objectives of ensuring free flow of water to downstream users in Yobe and Borno Sates, Niger Republic and the Lake Chad. Another objective is the control of devastating floods affecting settlements and farmlands as a result of inappropriate reservoir operation upstream of the river. This agreement comes at approximately one year after another commitment to provide funding of $90,000 to three community based organisations in the Komadougou-Yobe Basin through the Lake Chad Basin Microgrant Programme.
With this agreement, the total committed funding for local Initiatives in the Lake Chad Basin Commission Member States of Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Niger and Nigeria provided by GEF to the LCBC GEF Project amounted to $670,655.
