The level of the Caspian Sea is changing. It has risen so fast in recent years that manypeople are worried about increasing flood risk and whether there is adequate flood protection. Coastal zones include valuable housing, industry, oil installations and port infrastructure. The Centre for Water Level Fluctuation has a key role to play in providing information to the States bordering the Sea on the likely long, medium and short-term changes in the water level. The Centre also coordinates monitoring systems and flood preparedness planning.
There are still some areas of uncertainty. Technical investigations must continue, alongside the development of proposals for new research and some institutional changes necessary to improve the water level advisory service. CRTC Leader: Terry Evans |
