ACEP Phase 1 cruise data

An inventory has been compiled of all the data sets collected during African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP) field activities, including ten ship-based cruises and three shore-based expeditions. The ACEP data inventory contains 258 records compiled by scientists, technicians and data managers, each of which describes a unique data set. The purpose of the data inventory was to document the primary products of the numerous multidisciplinary research activities funded by the first phase of ACEP that generated data sets of value to the countries of the Western Indian Ocean region. It has been used by the Programme to meet its responsibility to ensure that proper archives are kept, that data collected within the EEZs of each country are made available to those countries, and that specimens and samples are tracked.

In accordance with Programme principles and agreements, ACEP has:

1. Provided full sets of all data collected in each country to Nationally appointed National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs) which will be the primary contact for ACEP data sets.
2. Archived DVD copies of all ACEP cruise data at the regional host institution, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) in their raw form (archive only, not for re-distribution).
3. Lodged specimens at National Collections for open access and study by scientists worldwide.
4. Incorporated fish specimen data into SAIAB’s Specify database which contributes to the South African Biodiversity Information Facility (SABIF) and hence to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), thereby making species distribution data information immediately available as part of the online GBIF global data set.
5. Established that the four main avenues for data dissemination are:
