The world’s poor depend critically on fertile soil, clean water and healthy ecosystems for their livelihoods. Their well-being is directly linked to sustainable use of natural resources. Consequently, environmental degradation undermines the capacity of poor people to meet their daily needs.
Yet, in most countries, integrating the environmental concerns of poor and vulnerable groups into development planning and investment remains a major challenge.
UNEP's work on poverty and the environment is a response to this challenge. Consistent with the integrated nature of environmental and development issues, UNEP has formed a global partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – the UNDP-UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI) – that aims at supporting integration of environmental sustainability into national development processes to reduce poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. |
