Article: Out of Mexico? Scientists Ponder Influenza A H1N1 Origins
"I'm amazed at the capacity we have with the information and communication technologies," says
epidemiologist Mirta Roses Periago, head of the Pan American Health Organization. "We used to do things
with our hands and smelling and looking at the patients." During the past few weeks, she notes, scientists
have rapidly shared sequences of the viruses, digital images of patient x-rays, and electron micrographs
of the new H1N1.
"At this point in history, this is the best surveillance we've ever had," said Keiji Fukuda, one of
WHO's assistant director generals.

WHO Influenza Portal and is also disseminate by the PandemicFlu.gov Web site.
This interactive world map shows the cumulative spread of new influenza A(H1N1) cases as they were reported to WHO beginning 26 April 2009. These numbers relate to laboratory confirmed cases and deaths.

Mexico was struck worse than any other country that were affected by A H1N1 flu, but because of a strong national preparedness plan and the quick decision made by the mexican authorities after this new virus was identified the outbreak was prevented from spreading unchecked.

Addressing a special session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Mirta Roses, said that much more information is needed to gauge the threat presented by the new H1N1 influenza virus. Nevertheless, she said, the countries of the Americas are better prepared today than in the past.

En una sesión informativa especial ante el Consejo Permanente de la Organización de Estados Americanos en Washington, la Directora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), Dra. Mirta Roses, dijo que falta mucha información para poder caracterizar la amenaza que presenta el nuevo virus de la gripe A(H1N1). Sin embargo, gracias al trabajo conjunto en salud pública de los últimos años, los países de las Américas están mejor preparados que antes.
Los países hoy están mejor preparados que antes para responder.
