Democracy Bridge
Regional and Multilateral Initiatives to Promote and Defend Democracy in Africa and America
In July of 2007, the Organization of American States (OAS) organized the forum "Democracy Bridge-Regional and Multilateral Initiatives to Promote and Defend Democracy in Africa and America". During this event, an agreement was signed between the African Union (AU) and the OAS to collaborate on various areas, including democracy promotion.
As part of this collaboration, Mr. Dieudonne Kombo-Yaya, of the Department of Political Affairs of the AU, participated as a special invitee in the OAS Electoral Observation Mission to Colombia during October 2007.
To continue strengthening the commitment made by the OAS and the AU during the OAS General Assembly, of June 2008, Resolution 2419, "Furthering Inter-Regional Cooperation with the African Union", was approved.
As part of the ongoing cooperation, on July 25 2008, the OAS received an invitation from the National Electoral Commission of Angola to participate as an observer in that country's Legislative Elections held on September 5, 2008. In this respect, four staff members of the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) were deployed to Angola to work with the AU electoral observation mission.
In the following months, AU members will participate in two activities organized by DECO: Association of Caribbean Electoral Organizations (ACEO) and the First Interamerican Electoral Training Seminar.
