AREA ------------------------- Lower part of Mekong Kratie to Vietnam Delta inlcuding Tonle Sap River DESCRIPTION ------------------ Estimated inundation depths of a medium flood event. derived from the MIKE11 model (Cambodia) and VRSAP (Vietnam) hydraulic model simulation of the 2001 flood. SOURCE MAP ------------------- Hydraulic Model analysis verified with results from Radarsat and surveys. SOURCE DATA SET -------------- Cambodia: MIKE11 Hydro-dynamic model 2001 Vietnam: VRSAP Hydo-dynamic model 2001, Field surveys 2000 SOURCE AGENCY ---------------- SIWRP Vietnam GENERATION ------------------- See NGIS report "Improvement of MRCS Regional Flood maps, 2003" STATUS ----------------------- Last update: May 2003 Completion status: 100 % COMMENTS --------------------- Cambodia and Vietnam Derived from the max water levels derived for the year 2001 flood simulation by the hydraulic model. Vietnam: The depth of the flooding has been derived by subtracting the terrain level from the generated node water levels. The DEM used was dtm_lm_vn for the other Cambodia and Vietnam parts. It was found that by ignoring all inundation with a depth 0.3m or less gave the best correlation with the radarsat. There is no topographic information in the SE part of the Tonle Sap lake or upstream of Kratie. In these parts it was not possible to generate the flood extent from the model. In these part the maximium flood extent from the three 2001 radarsat images has been used. In the southern part of the Vietnam flood area towards the coast it is difficult to differentiate between ‘real flooding’ and temporary inundation from ‘rainfall’ or ‘tidal flooding’. A fairly well defined boundary to the flood extent has been defined from surveys by the Vietnamese counterpart office combined with Radarsat images. Areas of inundation from the model outside this previously defined flood extent have been clipped and considered as not flooded. Cambodia: The area around Phnom Penh is protected by flood dykes so the output of the model for this part has been corrected by clipping.
