Abstract:
Estimated inundation depths of a minor flood event.
Derived from:
Vietnam: VRSAP hydraulic model simulation for 28-08-00
Cambodia: MIKE11 hydraulic model of 1999 flood
Cambodia and Vietnam: Supplemented with Radarsat flood extent. |

AREA : Lower part of Mekong Kratie to Vietnam Delta inlcuding Tonle Sap River SOURCE DATA SET : Cambodia: MIKE11 Hydo-dynamic model 1999 Vietnam: VRSAP Hydo-dynamic model 28-Aug-2000 SOURCE AGENCY : SIWRP Vietnam/MRCS GENERATION : NGIS report "Improvement of MRCS Regional Flood maps, 2003" STATUS : Last update: May 2003 Completion status: 100 % COMMENTS : Vietnam: The minor flood (recurrence 1-2 years-effectively the annual flood) has been taken by selecting an early stage of the 2000 flood. The 28th of August 2000 appears to give the best fit with the water level and discharge criteria for a 1-2 year recurrence period. Q28th of August 2000 at Pakse=30,000m3/sec, water levels at Kratie, Kampong Cahm, Phnom Penh, Chau Doc and Tan Chau on this date are all of the order of the 2 year recurrence flood. The flood extent was compared with the 2000 Radarsat imagery (taken around 25/8/00). In most parts a reasonable correlation was achieved. Some adjustments were made as described in the major flood In the southern part of the Vietnam flood area towards the coast it is difficult to differentiate between ‘real flooding’ and temporary inundation from ‘rainfall’ or ‘tidal flooding’. A fairly well defined boundary to the flood extent has been defined from surveys by the Vietnamese counterpart office combined with Radarsat images. Areas of inundation from the model outside this previously defined flood extent have been clipped and considered as not flooded Cambodia: The area around Phnom Penh is protected by flood dykes so the output of the model for this part has been corrected by clipping; The results of the model were checked with the radarsat imagery in Cambodia and Vietnam and appeared to give a reasonable correlation FORMAT : Grid 100m resolution CELL ATTRIBUTES : VALUE - Unique ID DUR - % of the year (365) innundated DUR_DAYS - Duration in days.
