Abstract:
Estimated extent of a medium flood event. derived from the hydraulic model simulation of the 2001 flood in Cambodia and Vietnam. Also incorporates the maximum flood extent from the 3 radarsat images in 2001.
No data for Thailand and Laos. |

AREA : Main flood zone in Cambodia and Vietnam SOURCE DATA SET : Cambodia: MIKE11 Hydo-dynamic model 2001, Radarsat Imagery 30-Aug, 23-Sep, 17-Oct. Vietnam: VRSAP Hydo-dynamic model 2001, Radarsat Imagery 30-Aug, 23-Sep, 17-Oct. SOURCE AGENCY : MRCS/MOWRAM Cambodia, SIWRP Vietnam GENERATION : NGIS report "Improvement of MRCS Regional Flood maps, 2003" STATUS : Last update: May 2003 Completion status: 100 % COMMENTS : Cambodia and Vietnam - Derived from the max water levels derived for the year 2000 flood by the hydraulic model. In the southern part of the Vietnam flood area towards the coast it is difficult to differentiate between ‘real flooding’ and temporary inundation from ‘rainfall’ or ‘tidal flooding’. A fairly well defined boundary to the flood extent has been defined from surveys by the Vietnamese counterpart office combined with Radarsat images. Areas of inundation from the model outside this previously defined flood extent have been clipped and considered as not flooded. The area around Phnom Penh is protected by flood dykes so the output of the model for this part has been corrected by clipping. The results of the model were checked with the 2001 radarsat imagery in Cambodia and Vietnam and appeared to give a reasonable correlation. In most parts where the radarsat did not agree with the model there appeared to be evidence of tree cover making the radarsat imagery suspect. Areas of local flooding (mainly from tributary rivers) not covered by the model but identified by the radarsat have been added to the flood area. FIELD ATTRIBUTES: INUNDATE inundation area : 5 - Flooded 0 - Not flooded UPDATES AND CHANGES: Paul Gager May 2003 - This file is an update of the version produced by the LRIAD project. The major differences are: The MIKE11 model has been used in place of the VRSAP model in Cambodia The 2002 Radarsat has been used in Thailand, since the earlier data was not well registered. More details are available in the NGIS report "Improvement of MRCS Regional Flood maps, 2003".
