MRC Flood Centre opens documentation centre to public

MRC No.04/06
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
4 April 2006

The Mekong River Commission’s Regional Flood Management and Mitigation Centre (RFMMC) based in Phnom Penh has opened its documentation centre to the public. Opening hours will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 4.30pm.

The RFMMC’s documentation centre is affiliated with the MRC Secretariat’s Documentation Centre in Vientiane, Lao PDR and can provide an extensive range of material on the work of the MRC in the Mekong River Basin for students, researchers and government officials. This material includes free publications as part of the RFMMC’s information dissemination services; publications related to the Flood Management and Mitigation Programme in the Mekong region; and scientific research; journals, maps and newsletters.

Products can be purchased at the RFMMC’s Documentation Centre or on-line at www.mrcmekong.org. Many publications are available as free downloads from the website.

The RFMMC was established in July 2005 as part of the Mekong River Commission’s (MRC) Flood Management and Mitigation Programme funded by the Governments of the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Denmark, and the United States as well as the Asian Development Bank and European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office.

The main task of the RFMMC is to produce daily flood forecast reports for the Mekong riparian countries.
The RFMMC monitors the river levels through a series of 44 monitoring stations stretching from Northern Thailand to the Mekong Delta. During the flood season China, one of MRC’s Dialogue Partners, also provides daily hydrological information from two stations in Yunnan Province in Southern China.

In addition, the RFMMC plays a major role in maintaining national and regional availability of important flood-related tools, data and knowledge; producing accurate regional forecasts with a suitable lead time and a timely and effective dissemination; and providing accurate, well documented and consistent tools for basin-wide flood risk assessment and trans-boundary impact analysis.

The Mekong River Commission’s Flood Management and Mitigation Programme was established specifically to meet the urgent need for improved flood management and mitigation to prevent, minimise or mitigate people’s suffering and economic losses due to floods.
