Description: The vision of the CWCBR is articulated as: "We see the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve as the best international example of integrating rapid growth and change with biodiversity conservation, sustainable living and heritage preservation." Six themes and Thirteen goals have been developed: THEME 1: Conservation 1.To conserve, maintain and rehabilitate biodiversity in the BR 2.To conserve non-renewable resources 3.To maintain the palaeontological, historical and cultural heritage of the BR THEME 2: Sustainable Development & Planning 4. To contribute to enhancing the sustainable economic well-being of communities 5.To contribute to coherent planning at all levels to provide models of land management 6.To adopt the precautionary principle to development in the region THEME 3: Stakeholder support 7.To seek stakeholder and community support for the BR 8.To develop a high profile BR THEME 4: Research & monitoring 9.To comprehend and understand change in the region THEME 5: Education & capacity 10.To provide education, awareness building and training to further community and stakeholder knowledge THEME 6: Operational & institutional 11.To secure adequate initial and ongoing management resources for the BR 12.To ensure effective, participatory and adaptive management 13.To coordinate with national and international networks

Additional: The Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve (CWCBR) was designated a Biosphere Reserve in terms of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MaB) programme in 2001. It now forms part of the International Network of Biosphere Reserves. It covers some 370 000 hectares of coastal plain and also has a marine component, including the West Coast Marine Protected Area. The CWCBR stretches from the Diep River in Cape Town to the Berg River in the north, and inland to the east.
