Second AMAP International Symposium on Environmental Pollution of the Arctic

Rovaniemi, Finland, 1-4 October 2002

The Second AMAP International Symposium on Environmental Pollution in the Arctic will address pollution of the Arctic in an integrated circumpolar context, focussing on a range of pollutant issues and presenting work conducted under the auspices of AMAP during the period 1998-2003. The Symposium will showcase results of recent research and monitoring into the sources, pathways, levels, trends and effects of persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, and radioactivity, and their implications for human health in the Arctic. It will also address new threats and mitigating actions. The Symposium will conclude with a panel discussion of the topics covered.

The Symposium is an important part of the process by which AMAP will communicate the results and conclusions of its assessments to Arctic stakeholders, and deliver its assessment concerning pollution issues to the Ministers at their Third Arctic Council Ministerial meeting, which is to be held in Inari, Finland, during the week immediately following the symposium.

The 2002 AMAP State of the Arctic Environment Report - Arctic Pollution 2002 - will be the primary documentation under consideration during the conference. This report will be provided to all participants. In addition to presenting and discussing the scientific information used in preparing the AMAP assessments, the assessment will be discussed within the context of regional and sub-regional environment management and policy development.
