ACOPS has had
a long-standing relationship with UNEP, culminating
in an
MOU concluded in April 2001.
UNEP
acted as implementing agency to a GEF Project for which ACOPS
was the executing agency, “Development and Protection of the
Marine and Coastal Environment in sub-Saharan Africa” which
delivered a comprehensive Project Portfolio of 19 framework
projects. This project also gave rise to the
African
Process, a continental initiative to prioritise
coastal and marine issues as a leading component of the drive to
alleviate poverty and achieve sustainable development
objectives.
In
August 2003, a new
Full GEF project in the
Russian Arctic was launched with UNEP as implementing agency,
which ACOPS will co-execute with the Ministry of Development and
Trade of the Russian Federation.
ACOPS
was
therefore delighted that the UN Executive Director, Dr Klaus Töpfer, agreed to give the 2003 James Callaghan Lecture,
which was held in the House of Lords on 22nd
October. Dr Klaus Töpfer spoke on “Millennium
Development Goals and the WSSD Plan of Implementation - The
Environmental Contribution”. He followed a series of
distinguished public figures who gave lectures at this event
honouring Lord Callaghan, the former Prime Minister in the UK
and the founder of ACOPS.
